Cleveland, Ohio - A Cleveland Heights Ohio woman was arrested Tuesday and made an initial appearance in U.S. District Court on the charge of solicitation to commit murder.

Last November, Meredith Marie Lowell used a fake Facebook account to advertise that she was looking for a hit man to kill anyone wearing fur.

MSNBC released Lowell’s Facebook post yesterday. It said in part:

“I would like to create an online community on facebook which would allow me to find someone who is willing to kill someone who is wearing fur toward the end of October 2011 or early November 2011 or possibly in January 2012 or February 2012 at the latest. The person willing to do this job would hopefully live in northeast Ohio, somewhere in Ohio, or be able to commute to Ohio and should be against people who wear fur products. I am willing to pay this person up to $830-$850 which is far more than I was originally willing to pay.”

The post then goes on to describe the type of people who she’d like to have join the cause.

According to Sun News reporter Brian Byrne, FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson said that the Cleveland bureau received information in November that Lowell was soliciting on Facebook for the murder of fur wearers in exchange for money and they assigned agents from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force to investigate.

Undercover agents communicated with Lowell on multiple occasions via the Internet eventually tracking her to the Cleveland Heights Public Library where she was using library computers to communicate. Agent Ryan M. Taylor set up a Facebook account and posed as a hit man. He sent her a private message saying he could help her.

Lowell and Agent Taylor took their communications to private email. One of Lowell’s communications to Taylor described the type of person that she wanted murdered. According to the agent’s affidavit   she was very specific.

“Here is the description of what the person should be who is wearing fur who should be killed – “ she wrote.

1) color – any ethnicity, and any race
2) age – preferably 14 years old or older but should be at least 12 years old, hopefully a teenager or older, should not be a child
3) boy girl woman or man
4) height – at least 4 feet or taller
5) weight – any

“Should not be anyone I currently know and definitely should not be anyone my family knows.”

Further records of emails between Lowell and the agent reveal a troubled, mentally ill woman with poor reasoning skills and OCD tendencies.

The affidavit goes on to state that Lowell wanted to be present as the murder was taking place so she could distribute flyers, and that she hoped to be arrested. She thought that by going to jail it would help bring attention to her cause as well as benefit her personally. She explained in emails to the undercover agent that she couldn’t stand living at home with her parents and brothers any longer. According to Lowell her family condoned the use of leather, fur and wool, and she wanted to get away from them and the house.

Lowell has not been linked to any animal rights groups, but cited a “general belief” that wearing fur was wrong in her communications with agents.

Lowell faces fifteen years in federal prison.
